The department commenced in the year 2017, simultaneously along with the establishment of Govt. associate college women Basti Malook Multan r. The department is rendering services for holding short courses and long courses including ADP courses. The curriculum undertaken by the department is the balanced combination of personality and character of students. Library science is an interdisciplinary field which combines the principles and practices of library administration. The disciplines that are associated with library science are education, management, and Information technology. The main objective of any library is to accumulate, organize, preserve and disseminate information resources.

Importance

The role of library science is to provide a combined service of research and teaching. It contributes to the knowledge base of professionals and helps in preparing them to achieve excellence. Library science is one field which has changed tremendously in the past twenty years which makes it more challenging than any other profession. The library science course will help in designing and improving libraries.

Mission

The department of library information science provides students with an understanding of the conceptual foundations of librarianship and information science and of the multifaceted nature of the wider information environment. It prepares students with a rich mix of knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to function as critical thinkers and effective communicators. Graduates should have a strong grounding in theory and the ability to translate theory into effective practice.

Goals & Objectives

To provide a high quality education at the graduate and intermediate level in the discipline of Library and Information Science through course work, independent research and experiential learning that fosters scholarly and critical approaches to the understanding of issues and practices in Library and information science.

 To prepare learners with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to construct and deliver solutions, services, and processes at the intersection of people, information, and technology.

 To develop in learners their capabilities to analyze, design, implement, evaluate, manage, and lead to address and meet social, organizational, and individual information needs.

 To educate LIS students capable of taking scholarly and critical approaches to understanding issues in Library and Information Science and related fields,

 To prepare graduates to explain, analyze and interpret professional and scholarly literature, research data and information resources to articulate their implications for LIS and related fields of knowledge and practice

 To educate professionals who are prepared to lead in the discipline and profession and who are committed to lifelong learning

 Students will apply the theories, principles and practices of library science as they perform administrative functions required for the efficient operation of public libraries and school library media centers.

 Students will identify and implement effective uses of library and information technology media.
 Students will understand the lifecycle of recorded knowledge and information from creation to use and the best practices for developing collections—including acquisition, selection, purchasing, processing, storage, and de-selection—with special attention to emerging formats and genres of information resources.
 Students will understand the techniques for discovering, retrieving, evaluating, and synthesizing information from diverse sources, and students will understand methods for learning and describing the information needs of various users and communities and how libraries and information centers can work with these communities toward meeting their needs.
 Students will understand and identify the technological infrastructure that enables library and information services, and students will be able to evaluate existing and emerging technologies toward inclusive and effective practice.
